Reading Pattern Recognition. I may be searching for awe, thus to make it easier to find, but I must nevertheless describe Gibson's newest piece as awe-inspiring. The story is set present-day, complete with cultural references, references to the disaster in New York, and little quirks which drag one off on tangents while reading. As usual, it's not a story as much as it is a whole-soul experience. Surreal, to be certain, but very solid. A little irrational. Human.

I'm awake because I want to be, rather than because I could not do otherwise. A welcome change.

update: A thought - a way to think about Gibson stuff. His stories - they aren't moral tales, beginning to end, beat the bad guy. They're closer to koans - tales to inspire circular thought, polishing an idea.

update to the update: Love to pump artists I respect - [livejournal.com profile] demonology101 - Faith Erin Hicks has got herself a spot on Modern Tales. It's not much, but every step forward demands congratulations.

how many updates can he make?: EBay was getting sued for someone posting allegedly libelous feedback on their service. They fought tooth and nail not to have to remove it, due to the prompt hail of liability that would bring upon them. The case was thrown out and EBay now has precedent to be treated as a common carrier like an ISP. Good. Damn it, if I post something on a site, it's my fault, my post, and the site should have every right to deny being at fault for it. They also shouldn't have the right to purge it, generally, but I can see that annoying them...
