So I've embarked on a not-insignificant journey this weekend; I mentioned to my mom the interest I had in gathering up Grandpa's old weekly writings, his emails to the masses, and getting them laid out and published for the family and future generations.
She let that slip to Grandma, who gave me the joyous news that grandpa had kept them all backed up, all three-hundred and ninety-one of them, since just before the end of 1995.
She also has all the trip reports, which were always so interesting.
So I'm looking at short-run publishers and trying to determine who to go with, and I've got the peripheral project of trying to figure out a publisher for my dear Grandma Anita's cookbook (and I'm a big fan of cookbooks, so I'm interested in advancing her project as well). So here's a call out to certain graphically-oriented folks and people who have too much time on their hands. So far I've found three self-publishing groups who might do the job, but two of them seem to be focused on getting my project to the paying public, which is not what I'm up to.

The last one is able to do roughly what I'm looking for, which is a short run around 300 pieces (Three hundred is some people's minimum, and that's about the area the price drops to something reasonable per piece). They only do paperbacks, though, and they only perfect-bind, so I'm wary because the poor things will fall apart. Other than that, it's acid-free paper, and they'll let me dig my own grave as to the layout for the book, which is good.
So right now here's what I'm looking for:
- A short publishing run, about 300.
- Prices for both soft and hardcover
- For the hardcover, cost for a decent binding.
- The ability to make my own cover, cover layout, and copy layout for the book, which, amazingly enough, isn't always offered.
Does anyone know of someplace who'll do that well? I'm doing web research...
