Reading Ovid's Metamorphoses today for the first time. My teacher lectured textually on a bunch of different things and struck a chord which set me musing. Hercules' legend follows back through a number of steps to Enkidu, Gilgamesh's friend, aka Nimrod the hunter. He's described as generally a problem, a homeless wanderer 'as like to destroy a city as save it'.
