issaferret: (comfy)
Recently I inherited a newer old computer than ones I've enjoyed before. It's a sad fact that my own computer is less than half as fast as the box I got because someone had decided it was in need of replacement.

This box - Dubbed Lucien, in honor of the Librarian of Dream - required a little tinkering - a low level format, replacement of a couple of the cards, but for the moment, it appears to be functioning quite nicely indeed. I've installed RedHat on it, largely because I wanted a nice Christmas tree variety installation so I didn't have to take any real effort. With a little tinkering, I got a couple of spiffy things set up which make me feel good about the world of alternative OSs. Specifically, I've got ZSNES up and running, which means I can run all the games I've got in emulation on this box. Gives me warm fuzzies.

The other one I only really got set up today; I bought a pair of cheap speakers to plug into the soundcard I installed, and with a little tinkering, I've got it set up so that I can run MP3s off of my own computer via the network. I'm contemplating taking the box out and setting it up on the table behind the couches, so that we can have a nice custom playlist for the vast quantity of games we have at this house.

I'm taking today off - woke up at 1:00 after waking up wholly unnecessarily at 9 to see Becky off, who'd crashed on the couch and woken on her own.

While I was up getting the cheap speakers, I picked up Gran Turismo 3, so that Jynx can have an alternative to Timesplitters 2. They've almost got that game completed, as far as I can tell. A very impressive feat. Amazingly, it's taken them less than 48 hours play time to reach this point.

Reading the Dark Elf trilogy - an old Forgotten Realms tale. I've also been reading the FR campaign setting I bought a few weeks ago. Usually I shun campaign settings, because they seemed to generally offer some 2D setting which offends intelligence. Unfortunately, I've noticed that without them, one's campaign setting homebrew is generally pretty 2D and offending of intelligence. Interestingly, Forgotten Realms embodies a lot of the ideas I like to toy with in fantasy - high magic, gods interfering with life on the plane, and whatnot. So I think I'll probably be running stuff in FR by default for the near future, see what happens. I'm working on a congame I can run sometime. Still need to write game for Monday. Maybe Becky's ready with hers. I don't want to rush her.

I've been feeling much more relaxed this last week - not that it shows a lot, but my center has returned to me. Among other things, I'm going to call Dell Financial Services this coming week and pay off the remaining balance on my old Dell, which I've been wanting to do for a while. This doesn't mean I'll have any extra money liquid; it means I can start paying off other debts which have built up because my financial responsibility gets gagged whenever I start getting unhappy/depressed. One less bill to pay a month will also make me verra happa.

Compilers is going well. I've got a very firm grasp of what we're doing, thanks to personal projects I've dealt with over the last two or three years. The first bit of the class has been primarily confirmation of concepts and learning a new tool - lex and yacc. I'm doing a lot better than some of the other people in class, which of course bolsters my self-confidence.

Chem also went well for this first test. Walked in, knew what I was doing straight through. Had one uncertain moment - had to remember what reaction was taking place at equilibrium in a strong-weak acid-base reaction to put the pH away from 7. Remembered quickly though, which made me happy. Now if I can only keep this up for the rest of the quarter.

Next week, we interrogate, er, interview, students for the web development post we've got open at the moment. Really, this shitty budgetary situation is going to make things very very bad for CSA - I'm going to be leaving soon enough, and they can't afford to hire someone for me to train to replace me before I leave. So I'm going to be leaving a big honkin' vacuum. Great. Like they aren't overworked enough already.

Mark and Becky are coming over; we're probably going out for dinner. A bad idea this Open House weekend, but I want food from outside the house.
