Phew. I've neglected this catalog of inanity for too long, but I've been busy, particularly at work which is where I usually write this thing.

San Francisco Weekend )

This is the important bit.

After the Dome, it was time for food. Neal sent us up with instructions to go to a place called the House of Nanking. I won't regale you with Neal's explanations of what the place was like, I'll tell you what it was like for us.

It looks like a tiny, dingy soupkitchen. There's a fryer out at the front, half-tiled walls, and graffiti in the bathroom. The place is a contradiction, though, if you're paying attention: There's a line of white-folk outside waiting to get in. A well-dressed, well-kept silver-haired woman steps out of the bathroom and goes back to her seat. There are no less than a dozen plaques on the walls for culinary excellence.

And then there's the chef. I have been informed he was a 4 or 5 star chef before he ditched and made this place. He has a presence which induces a certain awe. When we were all seated, he walked up and asked whether we'd been here before, then took our menus away from us. We mentioned we had some people with food allergies - Rachel and Amanda with their seafood, and Jynx with his no-four-legs. He nodded, then proceeded to write neatly on his tag for a couple minutes. Then he walked away without another word. We all sort of looked at eachother, acknowledging that we'd been in the presence of Someone.

We were given some of the best tea I've ever had, in Big, Ugly Plastic Glasses, with the buds and blooms still floating on the surface.

Food started coming: First, the best calamari I've ever had. Some kind of fried wontonish I have no idea kind of thing. Some incredible green beans. Fish I can't describe. More. There were separate dishes for Jynx and the ladies. We savored, we laughed, and enjoyed one of those little experiences that remind you that there is _good_ in this world of ours.

If you are in SFO, and in the mood for Chinese, or even if you're just hungry, it's on Jackson and Kearny, it's called the House of Nanking; the sign is big and gaudy.
