Wow. Google's decided to be mean. Last year, on April 1, they announced that they'd be offering an email service, free, complete with a full gigabyte of mail storage. Everyone laughed, some nervously, and said 'You're joking, right?'

Well, they weren't joking, and Hotmail and Yahoo Mail spent the year desperately trying to catch up.

It's April 1 again. Google's announced that they're... pretty much done with the whole quota thing. Everyone gets a slice of the disk space that's available, and they're just going to keep adding disk space. When I logged in, I had a 1500 mb quota (absurd!) and it wandered up 10 megs over the course of 20 minutes or so. I have an image of a fireman's drill lugging disk over to a big SAN, jamming it in fast as they can.

I also have this image of the execs in charge of Hotmail and Y!mail looking sorta like the Big Blue Furry guy in Monsters, Inc. watching the kid go through the garbage smasher.
