Was bored and at home yesterday and cracked open my 'free 14-day trial' of EVE that I'd gotten long ago.
My impression at this point is that EVE's the steroid-laden big brother to Escape Velocity. I could spend all my time in almost any of the many areas of the game, and if I pumped the appropriate skills up, I could be mining, day-trading on the market, and any number of other things all at once, while also doing a number of other things. It demands as much of your attention as you let it and has an immensely complicated UI to facilitate your workflow.
It's a game that could become a job - possibly a fun job, but a job.
It's unsurprisingly cracklike - the simple flow of action is relaxing, almost meditative, when you're mining and refining. The idea of 30,000 players all running around on the same shared world is awesome, a feat I give kudos to the designers for accomplishing. I have to wonder what failures and outages look like to the game world, if such can occur.
Anycase, a good first impression. I'm sure it's got a number of flaws, but for an 'I feel sick and want distraction', it was entertaining.
